Travel Tuesday question of the week – what is your best travel memory of 2010?

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a Travel Tuesday question of the week. I’ve either been tired, busy, sick, or burned out making it. However, now is the time of year to reflect and look back on what happened in our lives in 2010.

What’s your best travel memory of 2010? Whether you go far or stay close to home, the best travel memories are the experiences you have and there are many places to enjoy all over the world. For me, my best travel memory was close to home.

This past year, I celebrated the birth of my second son in January. While it didn’t involve travel, it has been an incredible journey. The year has very much been an up and down year with struggles, difficulties, and adjustments. However, my best travel memory of this past year is something I love doing every year – Apple Hill.

Every year, I love to go visit the orchards not far from Tahoe. I love the Fall and the times with family are the best. This year, I celebrated going there on my 5th wedding anniversary. So with a blessed year, two kids, an anniversary, and Fall in one of my favorite places, it is my best travel memory of 2010.

What is your best travel memory of 2010?

First off, congratulations Jeremy on the birth of your second son and for reaching that five-year milestone in your marriage…both great memories I’m sure!! Secondly, you are a true inspiration for those of us who complain with a whole lot less to juggle! Still not sure how you manage, but keep doing what you’re doing and stay healthy my friend! As for my fondest memory for 2010, it has to be, hands-down, having the opportunity to be in Mexico City for the Bicentennial celebration! That was truly a moment that will forever be with me! Here’s to a great 2010 and EVEN BETTER 2011!! Cheers!!

    • Thanks for the kind words Mark! Yes, it has been an eventful year. Not sure how much of an inspiration I am. As you can see from this post, I’ve been tired, sick, and burned out as a result of my efforts so need to slow down a little! :)

I am sure the Bicentennial in Mexico City is a memory you will always remember. That’s probably one of your best ones all-time and not just for 2010!

Petra in Jordan, no doubt. You most kindly read my post about it. Congratulation on son #2 from me too and Merry Chirstmas.

    • Thank you Inka! Merry Christmas to you as well! My wife’s aunt and uncle just got back from Petra and a tour of Egypt last week so I am eager to see their pictures and hear their stories as well!

Congratulations, Jeremy – on the birth of your son and such a lovely anniversary!

My best travel memory from this year is the weekend I spent in Rockport, Mass. this summer, with a day in Boston first, for the wedding of two friends. I saw some of my closest friends, whom I hadn’t seen in several years, and celebrating friendships and the beginning of a beautiful marriage in such a lovely town was wonderful.

Sounds like you’ve had a busy year, congratulations!! My favorite travel memory comes from a week at home. We met and traveled with a British couple on our RTW, and they ended their trip in the US several months after we returned home from our trip. We talked them into coming to our hometown of St. Louis, not exactly a travel hotbed for international travelers, and we decided to take the week off, too and go on vacation in our hometown. It was awesome seeing them again and becoming total tourists at home. It was an incredible week, and we all had a blast. Vacation at home is always a fun time.

    • Thanks Adam! With all of the traveling you did, it’s great that your best memory is with people you traveled with. Over the next few years, I am going to do a lot of traveling locally to introduce my kids to the world around them. A lot of people think you have to go far away to have fun. However, there are many great things close by and it’s all about the people you are with. I think about my past and my best travel memories as a kid were special times with family and friends.

Congratulations on the arrival of your little one! My best travel memories of 2010 involve holidays with our nearly-two-year-old. Hiking in Slovenia’s Julian Alps (with her in the backpack), splashing about in the thermal baths of Budapest, scrambling about the stones of the Parthenon in Athens. Travel with kids is no holiday but so rewarding!

    • Natasha, I am envious! I LOVE Slovenia and Budapest. I’ve actually written about both of these places on my blog and have some great pictures of Bled and the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. With a 2 1/2 year old and an 11 month old, I definitely feel your pain about traveling with kids! But it is definitely rewarding!

  6. Traveling w/ my family to Oregon this year. We had never been and had a amazing time in the great outdoors – hiking, biking and camping. A highlight of the trip with Crater Lake for sure! so beautiful!

  7. Congrats on the birth of your second son! No doubt you will give him a love of travel!
My favorite travel memory was my fiance proposing in an igloo while snowshoeing in the Canadian Rockies – very romantic!

    • How funny! Have you been paying attention to my recent tweets? Someone else shared their favorite memory as getting engaged in Mexico and we were talking about our getting engaged stories! Congrats to you and thanks for your congrats! :)

  8. Hey JB had no clue you had a baby…congrats. I am lightyears behind you….I need to catchup.

Best travel memories- revisiting Barcelona was brilliant…loved renting an apartment and sinking into the life of the Barri Gotic and check out some excellent tapas bars and also watching the Barca Seville game with some very enthusiastic locals.

Lubeck was damn pretty- highly recommend it, romantic and a great pitstop after hedonistic Hamburg.

Plus the 15 hr easyJet blogger challenge in Munich -was great with the Oktoberfest, got lucky with the weather and drank like a fish and walked 20 miles on 1 day I think…

2010 was a vintage year. Lets hope 2011 is the same.

Merry Xmas JB to you and your loved ones.

    • Thanks Kash! I now have a 2 1/2 year old and an 11 month old. My travel this year has been limited to seeing local places around here. It’s the first year since 1994 I have not been on an airplane! However, more adventures will be coming soon including a trip to Vancouver for TBEX!

Like you, I loved Barcelona! I saw Barcelona play Real Zaragoza at the Camp Nou a few years ago. I love watching Barcelona play and really enjoyed the city. You definitely had an eventful 2010 but you were only supposed to pick one travel memory! :)

  9. StruxTravel says:

Congratulations and Merry Christmas, Jeremy! I had some wonderful travel experiences this year… I think above all I was most impressed with Istanbul, Turkey. The sights, sounds, culture, and people were so amazing.

  10. Norbert says:

First, Congratulations on your second son, and Merry Christmas!

For me, my best 2010 travel memory is the whole process of hiking the Inca Trail all the way to Machu Picchu. This was a physical and mental challenge for me and I’m so glad that I achieved it. I have so many great memories of that trip, made so many good friends, and learned a lot about their culture.

    • Thanks Norbert! Hope you enjoy your Christmas in New York City!

Machu Picchu is awesome! My sister-in-law is from Peru and she and my brother-in-law were there last summer. They’ve actually been there a couple of times. Our Christmas card from them last year was them standing in front of it. I have a great appreciation for the people and culture of Peru because of my sister-in-law and hope I get to see it for myself one day!

  11. Cam says:

Happy Holidays to you and your family Jeremy!
Our best 2010 memory is without question the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. The BEST party we’ve ever been to. Amazing to have your country win the most gold medals ever, nevermind doing it on home soil. It was such an incredible vibe for the entire 17 days.
    Cheers!

    • Happy holidays to both of you as well Canadian friends! :) I am sure the Olympics were awesome! The Olympics started just a few weeks after my son was born and since I was home, I spent a lot of time watching them. I was cheering for the US of course but it is always a fun event. I imagine it was awesome to be at – especially in your own country! I look forward to visiting Vancouver next summer at TBEX!

  12. Andrew says:

Congrats as well on your son.

I guess I have two really big travel memories from 2010.
    1) Stepping off the plane in Athens after not being able to make myself fly for 10 years before. That was an amazing feeling of conquering fear.
    2) Meeting my girlfriend in Prague. We get to see each other so very rarely, it is a very emotional thing when we can. That was wonderful and exhilarating.

    • Two great memories Andrew! I applaud you for facing your fears of flying and I know the trip was very rewarding. Funny how your best memory was one in which you conquered fear. May you have many more great travel memories in 2011!
