Do you want to be this guy right now?

Who doesn’t love a beach vacation or a weekend beach getaway?

The sand between your toes.  The smell of sunscreen and a warm summer breeze.  Sand castles and surfing.

Summer is almost here and the beach is calling our name.

According to a recent survey done by Expedia, almost everyone enjoys time on the beach.  Some people even want time at the beach more than they want time with their family.

I grew up near one of the most popular beaches on the east coast – Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  I met many people who thought a Myrtle Beach vacation in the sun and sand was paradise.

While I didn’t necessarily feel the same (after all, this was my home), I’ve definitely enjoyed my share of beaches.  I’ve been to beaches in Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, California, Croatia, and Portugal just to name a few.

I’ve done the romantic walks on the beach hand in hand.  I’ve almost drowned in the ocean (which prompted by dad to sprint from his chair on the beach to come get me).

I’ve been stung by a jellyfish.  I’ve competed in beach volleyball tournaments.  I’ve been sunburned to the point of tears.  And I’ve wrestled with a shark in a fight for my life.

OK I am just kidding about that last one.  However, growing up at the beach I have spent a lot of time there.  And while I haven’t wrestled with sharks I have been to a nude beach in Portugal, written a guide to Kauai, and listed an island in Croatia as one of my off the beaten path places in Europe.

Yet to the surprise of some, I am not a big fan of the beach.

Despite my numerous beach experiences, I am no expert  on beaches.  However, Expedia conducted a survey and the results are in – people love a beach vacation.

Beachgoer behavior and your favorite beach vacation

Expedia’s 2012 Flip Flop report surveyed nearly 8600 people in 21 countries.  Americans spend nearly 40% of their vacation days at the beach and the average beach holiday is just under 8 days.

So what are the most important factors when picking a beach vacation?  Exactly what you think they would be – total vacation price and the beach itself.  14 of the 21 countries surveyed rated these as the two most important factors.

78% of Americans said that total price of the beach vacation was the most important factor.  So while people want to go to the beach, they want to make sure they get a good deal for their trip.

Of the total people surveyed, 52% plan on taking a beach vacation this year.  And despite my efforts to get people off the beach in Kauai, the two most popular activities were relaxing and sunbathing.  The Irish were the most likely to relax, Mexicans the most likely to lie on the beach, and the Brazilians the most likely to exercise.

Like to swim?  Join the Germans as most of them like to spend their beach time in the water.

Want to sunbathe in the nude?  The Germans are also your friends as they had the highest percentage, 15%, of nude sunbathers.  A little behind the Germans were the Spanish and Indians.  Bringing up the rear (but not likely to expose theirs) were Americans, British (both at 2%), and Japanese (1%) – the least likely to sunbathe sans clothes.

Dah dum. Dah dum. Dah dum dah dum dah dum dah dum dah dum.

Almost 40 years after the movie debuted, Jaws still scares people.  50% of people consider sharks when planning a beach vacation and 68% admit to being afraid of sharks when swimming.

So if you dare to go back into the water or just want to relax or sunbathe, it’s OK.  With Memorial Day around the corner and the summer travel season upon us, it’s time to start thinking about your summer beach vacation.

So how do you know what is the best beach vacation for you?

  4. Leah Travels says:

I’m a Laptop-Packin’, Totally Relaxin’ Singaporean Gal. That’s pretty funny since Singapore is a deep port country. That’s why they have so many ship yards there. The only beaches you’d want to visit are on Sentosa Island, and those are man-made. Whatever…it was a fun quiz.

  5. Cheryl Armstrong says:

I am a shell collectin, family focusin irish gal! pretty funny. thanks for the chance. hoping to make it to the beach later this summer!

  8. brittany says:

it said I am a uber chillin’ brazilian dude lol!!!

and this summer i plan on going to our local beach all the time. I LOVE the beach!

    • From reading the survey, Brazilians like to exercise on the beach. Are you active on the beach?

What’s your local beach? What activities do you recommend for the beach?

  9. Craig Slocum says:

I’m a play in the water beach goer!

  10. John B. says:

I definitely would call myself a Beach Bum!

    • You and a few million others John! :)

Have you taken the quiz on Expedia? People have had a lot of fun with the results and it’s only six questions. If you got a few minutes and haven’t done it, it’s a lot of fun.

  11. Betty N says:

Shell Collectin’ Uber-Chillin’ Singaporean Gal huh I would just have picked Zen lol

    • So does the Shell Collectin Uber Chillin Singaporean Gal fall under the Zen one? You’re the third Shell Collectin that I know of so far! I wonder if it’s mostly women that like to collect shells? :)

  12. I am a fun in the sun beach goer… I breathe beach..love the sounds of the crashing waves… of the birds flying over…of children laughing and playing in the sea and sand… watching people make sand castles…shell collecting,…. closing my eyes while sitting on a beach blanket and just listening to the sounds of seaside life… that’s the kind of beach goer I am. Cottage chic~ resort spa~ island getaway… all beckon to me. My friends are shellers, surfers, sailors, boaters, boogieboarders, windkiters, pilates and yoga on the beach trainors… and more!

    • Cathy, glad that you love the beach. I grew up at the beach so I’ve had my share of beach days. It’s what my parents normally did for a vacation – a week at the beach. A few years ago, I was in Kauai and stayed in a house right on the beach. All night long, I heard the crashing of the waves – it’s perfect!

We aren’t the same type of beachgoers but glad we all can enjoy the beach in different ways. With your love of the beach, do you have a favorite beach? What was your best beach memory?

  13. Laptop Packin total Relaxing Korean Dude

Actually I like places where I can sit in the shade and watch the waves – no sun for me anymore – love surfing the wave but yes Sharks are too plentiful in florida to enjoy

    • Yeah, sharks are most everywhere these days. Thank goodness I don’t surf because I would really be freaked out by them then. What are your favorite beaches to hang out?

  14. Hmmm, there were a couple answers for each ? that fit me well, so tried it both ways. I’m a water-lovin and shell collectin'(well that much I knew!) new beach findin’ but often practical thinkin’ Korean gal. Why exactly am I Korean? LOL

    • Well there were lots of answers based on how you answer the questions. You can take the quiz as many times as you want, lie, and see what other results there are! :)

As for why you are Korean, I have no idea. I think I am going to take it again to see what I am (I forgot)!

  15. Margaret says:

I always travel with my daughter, so I’m all about family travel and family beaches. I most enjoy beaches that provide water activity lessons (surfing, wake boarding, etc) for her.

    • Did you get a chance to take the quiz? It’s a lot of fun. I’ve never done the surfing or wake boarding thing but I like to swim. I prefer my beaches near the lake though but grew up at one of the most popular beaches on the east coast.
