After many months of waiting, airlines have finally offered some cheap flights for summer travel.  Airfares are higher than this time last year so travel tips for finding summer airfares may still be needed.  However, now is the time to start making plans for those first few days of summer vacation.

Cheap flights for summer vacation

Southwest Airlines – Find summer travel deals and cheap airfares from $39 to $179 each way throughout the country.  Most of the deals are $100 or more each way but there are a number of bargains.  Purchase by May 2, 2011 for flights trough June 29, 2011.  14 day advanced purchased required and blackout dates of May 26, 30, and 31 apply.  See Southwest for more information.

For those looking to travel to Vancouver for TBEX ’11, a weekend getaway, or family vacation, now is the time to find a cheap flight.

Southwest Airlines is the first to announce an airfare sale that extends into summer.  However, you can expect many airlines to match Southwest deals today.  The best time to look for airfares is on Tuesday around 3 pm EST.  This is when other airlines tend to match the airfare sales.

UPDATE: American and others have matched Southwest’s summer airfare deals or are offering similar deals for select cities.

Where to look to find summer airfares

Note that some airlines only allow flights to be booked directly on their site (like Southwest).  Others allow some online travel booking sites to list theirs airfares but not all (like American Airlines).  Most airlines allow all the online travel sites to search for airfares on their airlines.  So just be aware that finding the best airfare may not mean looking in just one place.

As the summer travel season gears up, the good news is that cheap flights are going on sale for the summer.  However, it doesn’t mean that summer vacations won’t be more expensive this year.

Whether it’s summer vacation or holiday travel, you can use these travel tips to find cheap flights any time of year.  And for your vacation plans, use these tips to save money on your next vacation.

Summer vacation deals are a bit late this year and a little more expensive.  However, Southwest Airlines is kicking off airfares for summer travel with their 7 days of deals today.

Awesome tips! I’m still waiting to buy my ticket for TBEX. Guess now’s the time!

  3. I’m a snob. I think you know that by now. I cringe at Southwest, Delta is my airline. Still, they have great prices.

When we travel with our dogs, southwest is the airline we choose because of their dog prices! So, a good deal for both, is a no brainer.

Airlines are hoping that summer air travel will help dig them out of the slump they have been in for the past year s . As business travel has plummeted consumers trying to escape all the doom and gloom for a couple of weeks of RR is pretty much all they have left to hope for.So if summer travel is this important for them youd assume they would take the time to load some juicy low airfare for us wouldnt you?Sadly they want to have their cake and eat it as airfare prices for the summer months are absolutely atrocious. These high prices will have a bad effect on summer travel – it will force passengers to sit and wait for fares to drop making their vacation plans even more complicated.

  6. Living in California, I love Southwest! It is a great inexpensive way to get from one end of the state to the next and they don’t charge for luggage. Guess its time to go see my brother in SoCal.

I love southwest airlines too. Hopefully they bring back this type of sale next summer.
