Memorial Day weekend in Sacramento: Sacramento Jazz Festival, KISS, and more!

Memorial Day Sacramento Sacramento Jazz Festival JubileeMemorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer!  And for those in Sacramento, there are plenty of weekend events to enjoy for Memorial Day.  From music to fairs to Memorial Day ceremonies to honor soldiers and veterans, there is plenty do this weekend in Sacramento.

While the weather will be cool, many normal May activities may not be popular like boating or time on the lake or river.  However, here are some of the highlights for events this weekend in Sacramento.

Sacramento Jazz Festival – The Sacramento Jazz Festival and Jubilee celebrates it’s 38th year in Sacramento with a 4 day event spread throughout the city of Sacramento.  It’s one of the most attended and celebrated jazz festivals in the US!

While most of the event takes place in Old Sacramento, you can find events going on at the Convention Center as well.  Tickets are $45 each for adults on Saturday and Sunday with cheaper prices on Friday and Monday.  Enjoy plenty of jazz music with food and fun this weekend.

Walk ‘N Rock for Kids – This annual event helps raise money for local children’s charities with a 5K walk at Raley Field.  For those interested in walking, online registration is open until Saturday May 28 3 pm and walk up registration is available on Sunday until 7 am.  Registration for the walk is $10 for kids ages 5 – 17 and $20 for adults 18 and over.

Every year a huge concert is held at Raley Field that night and this year will be no different.  You can’t get any bigger than KISS who will be performing Sunday, May 29 at 8 pm.  You can get your tickets at ticketmaster.

Sacramento County Fair – This weekend Cal Expo hosts the Sacramento County Fair Friday through Monday.  This year the fair celebrates 75 years with food, fun, games, and rides.  Admission is only $5 and seniors and kids are free!  For entertainment, enjoy sea lions, live music, magic shows, and lots of fun shows to entertain and educate kids!

City of Trees Food & Cultural Walking Tour – Explore the tastes of Sacramento with a 3 hour walking tour of the city exploring a variety of neighborhoods, restaurants, local eateries, and a variety of foods.  Taste Mexican, Italian, Asian, and organic foods with salads, meals, and desserts!  These tours are daily at Cesar Chavez Park at 11:15 am and costs range from $48 to $58.  So take the time this Memorial Day weekend to enjoy a side of Sacramento you may not have experienced before!

Find out more information at the City of Trees Food Tasting and Cultural Walking Tour.

Reading of the Names – What would Memorial Day be without honoring fallen soldiers who have served our country?  On Sunday, May 29 veterans and volunteers will read the names at the Sacramento Vietnam Memorial beginning at 7 am.  At noon, there will be a ceremony to honor veterans at the memorial and Vietnam Combat Medic Douglas Haney will receive a Bronze Star medal.

This event is free and you can find out more information from the Sacramento Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Memorial Day celebrations – One of the big reasons to stop and remember this weekend is to honor those who have served and given their lives in service to this country.  The Reading of the Names is just one of many services honoring veterans and fallen soldiers in Sacramento this weekend.  On Monday, there will be remembrance ceremonies all over Sacramento including the 44th Memorial Day tribute at Mount Vernon Sanctuary.

Check out my my story on last year’s Memorial Day ceremony at Mount Vernon and check out this list of Memorial Day ceremonies throughout Sacramento.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend and “thank you!” to all the veterans of our armed forces who have served!

This is really interesting. Memorial Day is for remembering our fallen soldiers in all the wars and what a wonderful way to spend a weekend at a Jazz Festival and pay tribute for all the men and women who have served our country. Thanks for posting this Jeremy..I will also take time to your posts.
