Weekend travel reading – a passport novel, a Lonely Planet interview, and more
By Jeremy Branham on Jul 29, 2011 with Comments 7
Travel guidebooks and magazines are a thing of the past. OK, not really but travel blogs are having a lot more impact these days in terms of valuable travel information and resources. Don’t believe me? Ask Tony Wheeler (more on that later).
For those who love to travel, here are a few posts to check out as you relax and enjoy some weekend travel reading.
Travel blogs for the weekend
Interview with Lonely Planet’s Founder – Nomadic Matt
Tony Wheeler started Lonely Planet years ago and developed one of the most successful guidebook companies in the world. While he no longer runs the company, he is staying busy in the world of travel. Here are his thoughts on likes and dislikes in travel, whether Lonely Planet guides ruin a location, and what he thinks of travel blogs.
My Big Fat American Passport – Uncornered Market
Many people who love to travel have a passport. We love collecting stamps to various countries and hope to fill up a passport with stamps one day. However, Audrey has a lot of pages in hers – enough to call it a passport novel. And there are a lot of stories that her passport can tell you.
Foreign exchange rates: should they influence our travel plans? – 501 places
Andy shares a timely post asking questions about how far money will go in this global economy. As exchange rates make some destinations more expensive, does this mean we change our plans or make travel plans based on the exchange rate? The answers aren’t simple but it’s something to consider.
Life is short. Travel now. – A Dangerous Business
Are some of us waiting on that right time to travel? What if that day never comes? How do you choose to travel and when do you do it? Amanda takes a look at time, experiences, hopes, and travel and figures out how to put it all together. Her conclusion? Life is short. Travel now.
The Good, The Great, And The Ugly – easyhiker
Ever been hiking along the coast of France? Michael shares the ups and downs and the good and the bad of hiking n France. Some areas are beautiful. Some paths come with scorching heat. In some places the hiking trails are altered to bypass nude beaches and developments. Check out the adventure with Michael as he hikes with his son.
And one more to add to this list is my most controversial post to date – Is immigration a bigger threat to the world than terrorism? (Check out how travel can help!)

Thanks for including my passport piece in your weekend travel reading round up. My passport really is like a novel these days, so many stories and memories from almost each and every stamp and visa — especially the land border and difficult visas!

That’s the first thing I noticed with your passport – how big it is! While many of us have a passport book, yours was much bigger so a noval came to mind. And after reading about your stories, it seemed appropriate! Thanks for sharing and inspiring others with your passport!
Again cool roundup. I really enjoyed Nomadic Matt’s interview with Lonely Planet founder!
